So in today's episode I feel like it's really necessary for me to talk about something that I've not talked about in a very long time, which is e-commerce and Instagram.

Since the very beginning of me starting a business, I've been doing e-commerce businesses. Now with the rising challenge posed by the Coronavirus, many of you are definitely impacted. So this episode is here to get you motivated to sell online, especially using Instagram. 

In this episode, I'll be sharing with you three reasons why your e-commerce business should be on Instagram and if you stay until the end, I have an amazing gift for you to get your Instagram game strong.

E-commerce businesses by definition means that you are selling products online to your local or international market.

You need to ship your products from wherever you are located to your customer wherever they may be in the world.

Now e-commerce is a 3.5 trillion dollars market in 2018, with new data suggesting that it may hit 4.9 trillion dollars by 2021.

Now, that's a huge market right there! If you're not on e-commerce right now, you really should get on to e-commerce, or make e-commerce one of the means for you to generate revenue from your business.

Now with that being said, in Singapore specifically, e-commerce accounts for 2.7 billion dollars in revenue, being a common port of origin. So a lot of the shipments actually goes through Singapore, before it hits the rest of the world. 

If you have suppliers or one of your manufacturers is based in China, for example. Some of them actually have to go through Singapore first before they come to your country - depending on where you are based in the world.

Now with this statistic into play today, I must say that if you've not explored or if you've not even considered e-commerce as part of your business, you need to consider it! 

And for those of you who are already in the e-commerce business, here are three reasons why you should use Instagram to market your e-commerce business.

#1. Instagram is a melting pot of small businesses.

Inspiring them to introduce shopping tags. Instagram recently introduced the shopping tags, well not so recently since it's been around for about a year plus. But shopping tags are only made available in certain economies. Having said that, some economies - just like in Singapore - it's just been introduced quite recently. 

This shopping tag actually allows your users or your followers on Instagram to tap and see all the necessary details of your product. Then your buyer can become convinced to buy your product. After your copy, after the caption, and after all the promotional information that you've shared on your post. Then they will be able to click on the 'buy now' button to purchase directly from your e-commerce store. 

According to BigCommerce, Instagram shopping tags are responsible for more than 1000% increase in traffic to e-commerce stores, guys! 1000% increase that's a 10x full increase in traffic to your e-commerce store.

And while it is currently not available in all economies - like I shared earlier - you want to take the plunge if your e-commerce stores are in one of the approved countries. To find out if your business or your country is one of the approved countries to use shopping tags on Instagram.

You can just Google 'shopping tag Instagram country list'. You will see the list of countries over there. If your country is not currently available, drop them an email and request for your country to be made available. Right now they are just testing it in countries and economies where shopping is very attractive, and a lot of people like using Instagram to shop for their products. 

If you appeal for it, or if you request for your country to be made available for shopping tags, they might consider it, and they might even push it out in the next update. Who knows?

#2. 9 out of 10 accounts that users follow are businesses on Instagram

Moving on, the second reason why your e-commerce business should be on Instagram, is that 9 out of 10 accounts that users follow are businesses. This means that if you're following 100 accounts on Instagram 90 of them are likely to be businesses. Now the chances of you being influenced by something from one of them just gets so much higher, my friends. 

When we flip it and look at it from a business perspective. If you are not in the eyes of target customers, you're not present at all. And I had an interesting conversation with one of my clients before this. Well, they told me that they found our business through Instagram. And jokingly our customer said to us "if you're not on Instagram you don't exist!". Now that is something for you to think about, being on Instagram don't you think so?

For some people, shopping on Instagram or seeing that your business is present on Instagram gives them that trust factor, that you are active in your business. So if you're not on Instagram according to them or according to your customers, you might not exist. You need to start being on Instagram so that people would know about you, about your business. You need to let them know that you exist. You need to let them know that you are there to give them the offers. And you want to help them improve their current state of life - whatever that is - and that your product is the solution for that problem. 

So remember guys, 9 out of 10 accounts that users follow are businesses on Instagram. If you're not one of those businesses that they follow, you're gonna lose out in a huge market share right there.

#3. Instagram helps your buyers make a more informed decision about your business

Now the third and final reason why your e-commerce business should be on Instagram is that Instagram currently helps your buyers make a more informed decision about your business. Being on Instagram helps you provide more information to your customers. More often than not, your customers are searching for the answers to the questions that they are looking for on your Instagram account.

According to Facebook, Instagram helps 80% of its users make more informed decisions before making a purchase. The content you share, the product reviews, your brand hashtag, your Instagram stories, and especially your shopping tags give your customers an idea of how active your business is. And just by looking at that they are able to make a more informed decision on the stability, reliability, and existence of your business. 

Now I know it sounds scary but it can be powerful to know where you should hang out to attract your ideal customers. And in this case if you're in the e-commerce business, you must be on Instagram right now. 

Well I don't know about you, but this episode definitely enlightened my team while we were doing research on it. It made us realise that e-commerce is a huge HUGE potential market and there's more than enough slices of the pie to go around.

Some industries' portions may be larger than others, but even if you earn just 0.1% of the whole market share, you're looking at about 3 billion dollars in revenue. Isn't that enough? I'll say that's definitely a good job, and your odds could be better if you dominate Instagram as your marketing strategy.
