3 Reasons Why You Should Work with a Female Business Coach

In 2020, there were 5.9 billion small businesses worldwide, with 6 million in the UK alone. Female business owners are in the minority, though. 1 in 3 UK business owners are female. However, the fact that there are fewer female-owned businesses means that having a female business coach is an added advantage. As a female business owner, I know the challenges facing female entrepreneurs.

In addition, there are differences between the way men and women run their business, significantly depending on the region. For example, according to Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), more women work as solo entrepreneurs than men. The 2018-2019 Women's Entrepreneurship Report showed that only 26.9% of male-owned business owners do not have co-founders or employees, while 36.4% of women operate their business independently.

What is a business coach?

In today's marketplace, especially since COVID hit, everyone wants to be a business coach. But, what is a business coach, and what can they do for you? Indeed.com describes a business coach as "a professional mentor who supports, educates and motivates" their clients.

Sometimes there's a misconception about business coaches. It's not about only being a cheerleader, but it's providing the guidance you need to accomplish your goals and move forward. Of course, we celebrate your successes too!

It's easy to confuse a business coach and a business consultant. They sound similar, but they are pretty different.

Indeed.com explains that a coach is more about you "as an owner and a leader." Instead, a business consultant is concerned with the business and its operations. There is a significant difference between those two points of view. A business coach supports you as a person; a consultant looks at the business as a whole. The secret sauce, though, lies with a business coach who understands your needs as a leader and how it affects your business.

Who needs a business coach?

Everyone, at one point or another, needs a business coach. Some people enjoy having a coach on-going while others like to hire a coach for specific times like setting up your business, launching a new product or service, or hitting a rough patch with your sales, marketing, or other areas of your business operations.

The #1 benefit when hiring a coach is adding accountability to your business.

Of course, as the owner, you are accountable to yourself and your family, but your business and life goals can get lost in the shuffle of running your business. When you have a coach in your corner, she will help you stay accountable to your goals and challenge you when facing obstacles like imposter syndrome, family obligations, or specific business struggles.

Working with a female business coach

The benefits of working with a female business coach are easy to see. We speak the same language and have the same struggles. For example, there are three main areas only a female coach gets it.

#1 - Gender Gaps

When you bring a business coach into your business, hiring a female coach overcomes some of those gender gaps that a male coach may not grasp. "Women are twice as likely as men to mention family responsibilities as a barrier to starting a business." However, even after starting your business, those family responsibilities and emotional barriers do not disappear suddenly.

#2 - The Family Perspective

For example, there are responsibilities that women hang onto regardless of their career or how busy they are, like caretaking duties, in particular looking after children or elderly parents. To some, caretaking duties “feels right” for themselves personally as a woman, especially if they are mothers. For me, as female business coach, I can relate to this perspective. I don’t mind if you need to breastfeed your child while we’re on a coaching call.

#3 - Tackling Confidence

Women also think differently than men. The confidence women feel is much lower than men. GEM reported that globally, only 43.4% of women are confident in starting a business, while 55.6% of men believe they have the necessary skills. In the report, GEM found "no region in which women rate higher than men" in this area. Isn’t that sad? That’s why at Fempreneur Secrets, we focus on the mission of empowering women with business knowledge so they can place her future in her own hands.

Only another woman can understand these struggles with balancing business with family responsibilities and the lack of confidence and insecurities faced by women everywhere.

How can a business coach help me?

Regardless of gender, there are different types of business coaches. Some concentrate on particular areas, while others offer a more extensive scope like executive or life coaching. Before hiring a coach, you'll need to decide what area you want to focus on and how that coach can help you get started or back on track.

Types of business coaches:

  • Executive - covering the leadership, overall vision, and growth development

  • Financial - either dealing with financial hardship or preparing for economic growth

  • Marketing - offering advice, goal setting, and planning specific to marketing your business

  • Sales - helping you overcome any obstacles about sales phobias

  • and more

Hiring a business coach involves some research on your part. You want to have a good fit for each other be able to communicate effectively. Typically, working with a coach is a long-term relationship. You need to trust that she has your back which is why I strive to empower you while challenging you to build the business of your dreams.
